Spreading the love through my fiction

I am so overjoyed by the response I have gotten to my novel "Mama's Comfort Food." This novel follows one woman's journey through breast cancer treatment, and provides laughter and insight along the way.

At the start, I pledged a percentage of my profits to an area group here in my home of Tallahassee, Florida: a non-profit group affliated with one of our hospitals, that supports breast cancer patients in many ways.

This is my small way of helping. Sometimes, as I see my friends and relatives challenged by this disease, I feel so powerless. No more. I can, and will, make a difference!

My love to all of you who are facing down breast cancer, or who have family members and friends who are. Please know there are people out there who are sending love and light your way.
Rhett DeVane
Southern fiction author of "Mama's Comfort Food"

Author with a Pink Lady cause

I have lost friends to breast cancer, plus more have been diagnosed. I decided several years ago to use my writing to help in some small way, so I started donating a portion of my book royalties to A Woman's Place, a group of folks in my city (affiliated with one of our hospitals) that help breast cancer patients with information packets and much, much more.

My latest novel, "Mama's Comfort Food", centers around a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, who then returns to her small southern hometown to seek support as she undergoes treatment and mends her life.

I urge anyone who is facing this disease, or knows of others, to read this novel. It offers laughter, hope and light where they are much needed. As with my other books, a portion of any sales from this book will be donated to help others battling the dragon.

My love and light to all of you on your journeys.

Rhett DeVane, author
www.rhettdevane.com

Wanting To be Prepared

I went in for my regular mammogram and they are now sending me for another mammogram and an ultrasound. There was an assymetric nodule on my left breast. I am not sure what to be thinking at this time.

In 1970 my mother had a small pea size lump that was found to be cancerous. They did a radical masectomy on her. We have come a long way I know. She is still with us today. I am just very nervous about what my diagnosis will be and want to be informed and prepared as to what maybe lying ahead for me.

Advocates for the cure,

Several of my friends and I are planning to walk in Washington DC in
October this year. We must raise $2300 each! One of our fundraising
projects is to make and sell a cookbook, promoting a healthful
lifestyle by providing tasty recipes which are low in fat and sugar. As
you probably know, in the last 20years there has been a preponderance
of evidence indicating a link between what we eat and our chances of
developing cancer. It is important to get the word out and give women
(and men) healthy meal options that also taste good.

I would greatly appreciate receiving recipes that have been tried
and true, that you believe to be healthful and we can include in our
cookbook. Also any inspiring stories, comments or pictures we could use
to personalize this book would be most useful.
13 yr old girls on traveling volleyball team for cancer awareness

Eleven 13 year old girls have made the cut and now is on their way to play on a traveling volleyball team in Hannibal, MO called "The Hannibal Pink Ladies". They are playing in honor of those who have courageously fought and won the battle and in memory of those who fought the fight, and lost. One team members mother won her recent battle against breast cancer so for she and her friends on the team, it is a very personal team. Not only will they learn to serve those in their community and to give back to them, but become part of team, building skills and techniques, becoming better volleyball players while staying healthy and continue to learn to make the right decisions in life. If anyone is interested in sending a note to these girls, my home e-mail address is brokes@sbcglobal.net. For them to know that someone unknown to them is cheering them on as much as they are for you, would touch them in ways only imagined by the impossible.
Breast Cancer Twice?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering who out there may have had BC twice. I had a lumpectomy on my left breast in 2002, followed by chemo and radiation, then low and behold, this year, was diagnosed with another lump in the right this time, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I am going through chemo at the moment following another lumpectomy and having radiation later in the year. My original lump was 2.5cm and no nodal involvement, however this one was only 11mm and was already in the nodes. What is going on, I drink a bit (that is, used to) but live relatively healthily. I was just curious to see if many others had had the same diagnosis.

Cheers, Tania.
